Have you heard of Media Refresh in CommVault?
It’s the process of consolidating your Backup Tapes from hardly-used media onto new media, but filling it efficiently, leaving the old media empty and reusable. CommVault is very clever and keeps track of where your jobs are now copied to; no need to catalogue or ‘guess’ where your data now resides.
We have a customer that due to mixed retention policies has data scattered over many tapes; Backups with varying retentions are generally mixed for performance and short-term manageability; a daily backup is copied to the same tape as critical Year-end backups, for example. As the daily backup jobs age and are marked for deletion, tapes appear to become fragmented.
This week we provided a proposal to this customer that will see over 1,600 tapes consolidated onto less than 600 tapes. The customer is understandably impressed that we are saving them well over R300,000 since they do not need to buy new tapes for quite a while!
